I was just listening to EF's "Am I Dangerous?" (among others) and relishing the crazed abandon and general sense of helplessness it sought to create. Having formed in 1991, Electric Frankenstein are something of an anomaly in the punk evolution; caught between the original snarling fools like The Damned, Sex Pistols and the even more ancient Stooges and MC5, and what passes for "Punk" today (i.e. skinny kids with crappy girl haircuts who all allegedly love skateboarding and Blink 182 concert tours). The "in-between" effect goes way beyond chronology, though. It reflects the sound, too. Never completely punk and not quite metal, EF knew how to send jolts in multiple directions with their frantic imploring message. There's an assured madness in the lyrics, and a bad-ass punching guitar that makes Oasis sound like Herman's Hermits. One listen of "Speed Girl" was enough to get me hooked for life. It took me back to my youth, in 1977, when the airwaves in my native Britain were being bulldozed by a new phenomenon called Punk Rock. When Devo tour tickets were selling faster than tartan bumflaps and bondage pants. And guess what? Skateboards were making their first ever appearance too. Coincidence? Totally. So you kids who're brainwashed into thinking you HAVE to like skateboarding just 'cuz you love My Chemical Romance concerts, wake up and smell the Stiff Little Fingers. Skateboarding's cool, don't get me wrong, or at least it was back in '77, when the Queen's Silver Jubilee was soiled forever by Johnny Rotten's twisted anthem. Saturday afternoons were spent shunting up and down paved bankings in the city and listening to the Stranglers' "Straighten Out", or even "Black Betty" by Ram Jam, a classic rock tune that had somehow become folded in with the likes of the Ramones, the Clash and Angelic Upstarts. Punk was always a blurred genre, as bands like The Jam and Eddie and the Hot Rods were also considered part of the movement, as were Generation X and Sham 69, despite sounding more like pub bands than some mocking futuristic menace like the Pistols or The Vibrators. If you're 23 and you think checking out the Eddie Vedder schedule is exciting, you might not fully appreciate what Electric Frankenstein represents, or why they're that bit special. There was a hefty chunk of years between 1977 and 1991, but EF preserved everything from the original punk era, like a little bead of punkishness propelled forward in time due to some godless urge in the fabric of reality. Compared to the likes of Green Day and Incubus live performances, these guys are primal. They mean something. And that's not nothing.is it? - Ian Hough

- Ian Hough was a tween-Punk back in the 70s, along with hordes of others of a similar persuasion. He has written on a variety of topics surrounding British underground culture, including Perry Boys, the story of how English music, fashion and football hooliganism changed the face of youth movements forever. Hough is a big fan of pies and ale and other bad-for-your-health Englishy things. He lives outside Hartford, CT.
